IP Cloaker – True Privacy

[elf_links]

As more of our lives move online, then digital privacy becomes a much more important issue. It’s an often overlooked issue, yet the dangers are very real indeed. Particularly in the case of young people who are often far too open with personal details than they should be on various social media sites.

However it’s not just younger people many of us are guilty of oversharing particularly on sites like Facebook where there is virtually no anonymity. After all I wonder how many people are aware that by sharing their holiday details online not only are they increasing their risk of their home being burgled but also possibly invalidating their home insurance. That’s right, announcing to all and sundry that your house is empty could possibly invoke a clause in most insurance policies that you ‘take reasonable care’ in securing your property.

IP Cloaker

This sort of stuff though is fairly easy to control, just think twice about posting personal information and remember that anything you do post is probably accessible to the world. However there is another side of online privacy which we have virtually no control over and why you should consider using an IP cloaker when you’re online.

Of course, I’m referring to your unique identifier online, your IP (Internet Protocol) address. That little number which is allocated to you when you connect to the internet and is then used to track, monitor, filter and block your online access.

Unfortunately you must have an IP address or the internet simply won’t work. Yet having a unique number assigned to your connection means that you have virtually no privacy. At your ISP a series of logs exist which basically list everything you do online, every web site you visit, video you download or message you send. These have been expanded over the years and in response to the Government’s Investigatory Powers Act 2016.

Now you might be a little more pragmatic than me, and perhaps consider that it’s ok for the Government to have access to your entire internet history – after all we have nothing to hide. However it’s not just them, marketing companies and web sites track your visits customizing your browsing and stuffing adverts wherever you go. Cyber criminals and hackers monitor your connection especially when you use unknown and highly insecure Wifi access points in cafes, hotels and other public location.

Why People Use an IP Cloaker

However forget about all these, there is one main reason that people use some sort of IP cloaker and this is to avoid the blocks and filters that are all over the internet. Ranging from the sort of filtering enacted on a country level to individual websites who restrict access based on location (which is determined from your IP address). Almost everyone has encountered this from when you’ve clicked on a YouTube video to be told – sorry not available in your country.

Worse still when you sit down to enjoy your favorite TV channel online and discover you’re in the wrong country. For me I can still remember missing ‘Match of the Day’ on a Saturday night just because I was stuck in a hotel on a Belgium Industrial estate and hence BBC iPlayer no longer worked.

It’s this region locking that drives people mostly to use IP cloaking programs because you can simply bypass all these restrictions. Personally for me it means when I’m travelling I can access every single UK TV station online simply by hiding my real location and pretending I’m in the UK. Others will connect to US, French or Canadian servers in order to access the websites they want and so on – here’s an example of how an IP cloaker works.

As you can see if you use the right sort of VPN service then you can change your IP address location at will. So as long as you know which country is required you can switch to that location when desired. As previously mentioned,  for me it’s to switch to a UK IP address whenever I’m travelling, although I also use US and Canadian servers to change my Netflix locale too.

It’s not only restricted to computers and laptops either, you can use this particular VPN service on mobile devices too like tablets and smart phone.  You’ll need to set up the VPN connections individually but they only take a few minutes each and you can then use the associated media apps when connected as well.   Just create the VPN connection to the required server enter your Identity Cloaker username and password and then enable it when you need it.  If you need extra security you can enable the IP address changer to switch automatically every few minutes, which makes your connection even more secure.

It’s pretty straight forward to bypass most of these blocks although in the last few years there have been some complications.  Some media companies have started to try and block access from these VPN services – because obviously an IP address cloaker switches control back to the user.  So although a properly configured VPN cannot be detected, companies like the BBC have been identifying them by looking at IP addresses with too many concurrent connections on them.   It does mean that many VPN services don’t now work with BBC iPlayer although the bigger companies like Identity Cloaker are still fine.

This crackdown does mean that unfortunately none of the free methods work anymore, either because they are not configured securely or the number of connections on each server means they are easy to identify and block.  So I’m afraid you won’t be able to watch BBC iPlayer abroad free anymore for example.

If you are particularly interested in a certain channel or media site then make sure you either ask the company first or try a trial account, many media channels have been adding other restrictions and it changes all the time.   At the time of writing for example Netflix will only allow specific connections from residential IP addresses and only a couple of VPN services like Identity Cloaker have these.

Change IP Address to United Kingdom

[elf_links]

As I sit here relaxing in the Turkish sun whilst reading of the political madness that is overtaking my home country – why on earth would I need to change my IP address to a British one.  No I don’t crave more Jeremy Corbin quotes or robotic soundbites from Theresa May to reassure me when I look at my UK based pension fund.

No I want to change my IP address to the United Kingdom because it’s Wimbledon fortnight.

I forget every year,  for some reason Wimbledon doesn’t get much coverage in downtown Antalya.   Then I’ll spot some little post or Tweet like this one about an old bloke who nicked a towel from some kid who was thrown it  he’s going to regret that as it spirals around the world’s press! However it made me remember we’re in to Wimbledon and the holder is British, how crazy sounding is that.

So I have to watch Wimbledon, I’ve found it on an Arabic channel – but frankly it’s not quite the same. You need Sue Barker at the very minimum and now both John McEnroe and Boris are part of the experience too, and poor Boris of course needs the money now too.

Nope it has to be the BBC, the host broadcaster of Wimbledon for me and so necessitates the scramble to hide my location and link up with a UK IP address. For that’s what you need to do, all the coverage is there, every match streamed live across the BBC channels. All of which are streamed live on the BBC site and archived on the BBC iPlayer site waiting for you to watch them. I have now learnt my past lessons of trying to find ways to stream Wimbledon down a free VPN because frankly there’s no such thing.

So here we go a video for you dear reader, something to help you choose the best VPN service for BBC iPlayer from whatever exotic (or not) location you find yourself in.

Free yourself from the commercial tyranny of the BBC Web Media division and bloody well enjoy it online wherever you are. For the cheapskates like myself, the suggested 10 day trial is now enough to cover the end of the Championship as long as the rain doesn’t appear. Remember when you’re connected, as long as you pick a UK based server then you’ll have a UK IP address irrespective of your real location. The sultry tones of Sue can be drifting down your speakers before you know it, even for the technically challenged. Yes you’re using a VPN tunnel to change your IP address to the United Kingdom but if you can click install and then select the UK flag then you’re good to go. It’s not that hard honestly.

Good luck to Andy Murray. Here’s the . and of course you can extend it for BBC access indefinitely if you wish.

Change IP Address Sweden – SVT Play

[elf_links]

Sweden is a wonderful place to live, with a great reputation across the world in all sorts of positive areas.   They have one of the most environmentally friendly outlooks in the world and are known as a very welcoming and friendly people.    In the technology world they are often thought of as the home of the now defunct infamous digital content index – The Pirate Bay.

There’s a reason that Sweden was a logical place for such a repository to be established there because it has a proud history of protecting people’s privacy.  In fact Sweden was the first country to enact a comprehensive statute designed to protect the privacy of personal data, the 1973 Data Act.    There were already personal freedoms relating to these issues in the Swedish constitution, they are among the world’s trailblazers in protecting personal data.

Change IP Address to Sweden

So Sweden is a great place which has comprehensive laws to protect your privacy, which is great if you’re in Sweden but how can others benefit from this protection?  Well one answer is to invest in a VPN service which has servers based in Sweden.  This will allow you to route your internet traffic through the country and effectively have a Swedish IP address.

It’s great for privacy and security, plus useful for all those millions of Swedish expats across the world.  Using a Swedish VPN means that they will be able to access resources based in their home country like SVT Play irrespective of their actual location.

It’s actually the on-demand service run by Sveriges Television and is one of the most popular websites in Sweden. However the site is also geoblocked meaning that no-one outside the country can get access to it. However the technology works on your IP address so that means that if you change your IP address to a Swedish one then you’ll be able to access from anywhere.

The best way to do this, is through a VPN service that has servers based in Sweden. A few of the main VPN companies have these, although they do vary in quality. The service we usually use is called Identity Cloaker and has several Swedish servers available to use as part of their standard package.

Here you can see the Swedish servers in the Identity Cloaker software, this is the PC version which sits in your taskbar.  The concept is simple you simply choose the country you wish your IP address to be located in – selecting one of the Stockholm servers will give you an IP address originating in Sweden.  This will allow you to bypass the SVT Play restrictions and watch their site as normal.

The benefit of these sort of services is that your location will no longer restrict what you can do online.  If you want to watch the BBC then choose a UK based server, for Hulu or US Netflix just pick one in the US – for Irish sites choose one of these.  It’s incredibly liberating especially if you’re in somewhere remote where access to the world’s biggest media sites is not normally possible.

The VPN completely hides both your location and your real IP address.  If you use a Swedish VPN server you’re also protected to some extent by the strong Swedish privacy laws as the server is physically located in Swedish data centre.   If you’re particularly concerned about privacy then it’s generally best to use a European service perhaps in France for example to be covered under the EU’s strong privacy laws.  However it should be noted that Identity Cloaker delete all log information anyway.

If you are trying to access geo-blocked websites then you’ll have to select a server in the country that has access.  Remember though, there will be some latency if you connect to servers on the other side of the planet however this is usually negligible.

You can test it out here – IDC, for a few Euros.

Get a Czech IP Address

For Czech citizens who travel a lot, getting a Czech IP address really makes sense. For example many websites based in the Czech republic are inaccessible as soon as you travel outside the country. The growth of regional only websites has grown in the Czech Republic just like the rest of the world. Access is restricted for a variety of reasons, media sites like Czech TV channels do so because of copyright issues, whereas many organisations like online banking block access to prevent remote fraud. It’s rather ironic that most of the websites are more useful to the traveller when they are away from home anyway, you can find a list of Czech allocated addresses here.

czech ip address

There is a solution to this, when travelling you can hide your real location by connecting through a secure VPN server. If you enable this virtual connection when you logon, then you can effectively change your IP address to the Czech Republic as long as the server is based there.   Unfortunately the free route is pretty much closed now, even if you could find a CZ proxy site then it wouldn’t be much use.  Almost all websites which block based on location now can detect any simple proxy and block it automatically, they might possibly work with sites for YouTube region blocks.

How to get Czech IP Address – the Solution

You have to use either a VPN or SSH service to bypass these blocks nowadays, and it must be configured securely.   There are many VPN services which are available online nowadays, however most of them do not provide servers in the Czech Republic. Most have servers in places like the US and UK, for accessing popular media sites in those countries.

Some services however do provide a wider selection of countries to their subscribers. Most of these are the more established services who have built up a larger infrastructure One of the oldest companies in this sector are called Identity Cloaker who are actually based in Prague and therefore have some of the fastest VPN servers that provide a Czech IP address.

You can see the software in action here –

Although the connections illustrated in this video show the user changing to a UK IP address, for a Czech IP address you simply select one of the servers based in the Czech Republic. Because Identity Cloaker is based in Prague, the Czech servers are actually some of the fastest and they run very quickly indeed.

Remember when you’re connected to the Czech VPN server, you browse with Czech ip – your web and internet experience will be the same as if you were actually there. If you need to get actual local results you should turn off the VPN connection or select the country that you are in.

The best VPN services however have lots of uses to anyone who travels a lot.  You can switch through servers whenever you need don’t just use a Czech web proxy there’s loads of other media sites to explore.   Try the great sites in the US by switching to a US address, French TV has some great channels too if you speak the language.  Some of the world’s best online TV stations come from the UK in the form of the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 – just choose a UK server instead of Ceske proxy.

There’s really no reason to limit yourself, fight back against all the regional restrictions – you’ll be amazed what you find.  For example there’s lots of premium soccer games like the Premiership and Seria A broadcast from free in countries like India – just pick the right server to unlock.

Although using a Czech republic IP address is useful for travellers, security is also important. Ensure that you always enable the VPN before accessing any secure site like email or online banking through a public wifi access point. These connections are notoriously insecure and many of these connections in places like Hotels and airports are monitored by identity thieves who look for login credentials to steal.

When the VPN is enabled all your data is encrypted and protected from prying eyes, ensuring you can safely use secure sites while switching to a Czech IP address. Identity Cloaker is available in a ten day trial which is perfect for occasional trips although the year subscription is cheaper overall.

Change to Italian IP Address From Anywhere

Most of the really popular region locked content is based on USA and UK servers, so people are usually searching for British and US IP addresses.  However in just about every country you’ll find popular web sites which are restricted to the domestic market.   For example in Italy there’s a fantastic broadcaster called RAI who broadcast most of their material on a website called RaiPlay which has several channels.

Italian IP Address

Unfortunately, as mentioned Rai is limited to the domestic market only so unless  you have an Italian IP address then you’re not going to get access.  Fortunately most of the good vpn service providers now cover a decent variety of servers and usually Italy is included.   So a quick connection to a VPN server based in Rome you” browse with Italian IP address which is all you need to access RaiPlay and the other Italian only broadcasters.

How to Use an Italian IP Address

Here’s a quick video demonstrating how you can watch Rai streaming Estoro – here

So as you can see the initial attempt fails because the Rai Play web sites looks up the origin of the IP address and sees it’s from the UK.  When the VPN is connected however this actually causes you to change IP Address Italy and  because the server is based in Rome you’ll find that you get full access because of the Italian IP address.

Here’s another option if you think you might need an Italian VPN for longer.  It’s called NordVPN has loads of Italian servers and has some amazing deals on it’s longer subscriptions using although if you only subscribe for a month it’s more expensive.

ip italia

The software demonstrated links through to many European countries and so you don’t need to particularly specify your requirements. It’s a simple matter to switch from a US server to VPN Italia with a click of the button and then on to a French IP address afterwards. As long as the VPN server is configured correctly it should be virtually undetectable, so your identity is protected as is your location.

Most of the European countries have servers based in them including the Rome based ones for use as an Italian VPN, there are strict privacy controls that protect your data enshrined in European laws.  You should be careful while using servers in other countries though where there is little protection compared to an Italy server.  For example although Russian servers are often used by computer hackers to hide their identity in many cases they’d be safer using  a well regulated VPN services based in Europe.

Choosing to browse with Italian IP is a fairly safe option and of course you’ll need an address from an Italy IP range to access channels like RAI play.

So if you’re looking for an Italian IP address then you should have a reasonable amount of choice with the larger VPN providers.

Why not try the trial, there’s no obligation and it only costs a few Euros to test it out.

The Role of DNS in Region Locking

It might seem quite strange to think that the Domain Name System, actually plays a role in filtering and region locking however it is actually true. In fact DNS has been used extensively on both sides of the battle both for blocking access and bypassing content filtering. It’s most extensive use is historically as a very blunt weapon to block access to websites.

Many countries still use DNS poisoning/spoofing in order to block access temporarily to specific sites. Turkey for example still periodically uses DNS to stop people accessing social media sites, supposedly in the ‘national interest’. It’s quite simple to do, you just modify the DNS records of the sites at the major ISPs in the country. So instead of Facebook resolving to the true IP address it is routed through to a government server instead. It’s a simple method and fairly effective although easily bypassed by using a trusted DNS server instead of the modified ones.

smart-dns

However on the other side of the coin, perhaps more surprisingly you’ll find DNS used to bypass region blocks.  What happens is that you use ‘Smart DNS’ servers to effectively make decisions to route traffic.   For example many people use a Smart DNS Netflix system to enable access to different regions of the Netflix media sites.   All the server does is route the connection through the appropriate country before accessing the Netflix website.  SO if you want to use American Netflix you’ll be routed through a US based server – through a British one for BBC DNS and so on.

The advantages of using DNS in this situation is that you only route when absolutely necessary unlike a VPN.  The other significant bonus is that it’s simple to modify DNS settings on any device, without the requirement of installing software on the client.  This means you can use Smart DNS on TVs, Tablets, games consoles and media streamers simply by accessing the network settings and specifying the modified DNS servers.

Browsing with a French IP Address

Your IP address can seem to be located in any country you like if you have the resources to change it. For example to access many sites based in France you must have a French network address or you’ll simply be blocked or filtered. It follows that anyone might easily acquire a French IP address by using a VPN to hide your location. The simplest solution to access French resources is to receive a VPN that supplies a French IP Address. All that really needs to be done in order to bypass the region locking during registration or access is always to utilize a web proxy or VPN from France.

Another of the fastest methods to hide your IP address is with a proxy site. You’ll get significant browsing speeds along with a high degree of anonymity. It is probably the top choice in regards to hide your real IP address, but they’re not free. The actual fact is the fact that if a site is absolutely intent on blocking all and every non-local visitor, they will be able to do this. However an increasing problem is that proxies now can be detected relatively easily and can be blocked automatically.

Using French IP Addresses

You’re learning English and urge to surf the Internet as though you are located in the uk. You’re learning French and urge to surf the Internet as though you are located in France. Very wide selection of entrepreneurial and company uses. Therefore, if somebody would be to access any neighborhood French chat program from outside of France he will need to obtain a French IP address as a way to achieve that. The important dilemma of web proxies may be the speed that is considerably low. However it is an excellent site and has every one of the top US and European shows in addition to some French stuff.

If you’re searching for a comparison of VPN providers within the French language, you are going to find Meilleur VPN an outstanding website. VPN will usually provide you with a lot of choices to choose IP from. The main aspect is to pick out a provider who offers a huge variety of available servers. There are plenty of VPN providers all over the world. It is a hassle to get legitimate services and take lots of effort on your own part. In my experience Identity Cloaker is the first out of many VPN providers available on the market, for a good service and the top value for the money.

There are a couple of simple and simple steps which you want to follow as a way to receive a French IP address. You need to select the server that is nearest to you. If you’re located somewhere outside France and you’re in need of the French IP address it can readily be arranged. The further away you’re from the remotely located server the increased impact to performance you’ll start to see. To be able to possess the French IP a massive part of this may be unavoidable.

Ultimately, complete bibliographic info, for example, size of the electronic file in addition to a neighborhood call number is contained within the header of the electronic text.
Agreeing with the research, young individuals are leading the way in regards to VPN usage, with almost 1 third of individuals between 16-34 having used a VPN. The list might be filtered by a lot of attributes which include the port number of the proxy, country of origin of the proxy, and the degree of anonymity of the proxy. It turned out, however, the option wasn’t visible enough for users.

Why Do I Block My IP Address

Although I’ve worked in IT for many years, for much of that time managing IP addresses wasn’t really that much more than an admin task to be completed. In my earlier career many corporate network administrators didn’t really trust or use DHCP and assigning IP addresses individually was typically very common.

This led to a huge lead in time for assigning anything new on the network, you couldn’t just plug a PC onto the network and it would work – no forms needed to be filled in and requests for IP allocation had to take place, often from a huge IP address spreadsheet. Nowadays this wouldn’t really work, there are so many devices on most networks that managing the addresses manually would take forever.

When the internet arrived in the early 90s of course, IP addresses became much more important – simply because each and every device needs a unique address to communicate. Suddenly the IP address took on a whole new significance, it was now your unique identifier and it could be used to monitor how long you spent online, what you downloaded and web sites you visited.

Not only that but your address is recorded in all sorts of places and people to customise, monitor and effectively control your online activities. Take for example something as simple as visiting Google and searching for something – have you ever noticed how your web results display local results? This is because Google is recording your location and using that information to tailor your search results. Of course this is useful but your address will also be used to block access or filter content too.

So it’s not surprising that some people get unnerved by this surveillance and use devices like I use in this video – How to Block my IP address

Of course using a system like this whilst stopping your address being logged will also have other effects. For example if you’re hiding behind a US IP address and are based in France you’ll get redirected on that basis. It can be a pain being directed to US sites by default, when you really want the French version. So it’s best to try and use a VPN server in the same country unless you want it to bypass geoblocked sites like BBC and Hulu.

These are among the many thousands of major media sites which will block access based on your location. However switching countries can in this circumstance work to your advantage, use a UK one to watch the BBC online, a US one to access Hulu and etc.

Why Would You Need a New Address?

Although the internet is of course responsible for breaking down all sorts of barriers across the world, there is still a certain amount of prejudice and imbalance that exists online. Unfortunately as the internet becomes more politicized and commercial these inequalities are also starting to increase too. Take for example the commercial side, firms quickly realised that if customers noticed that they sold their products at lower prices points in certain locations, the internet could be used to take advantage of those cheaper prices. This is obviously great for the customer, but not so much for the retailer as it eradicated a powerful commercial tool of profit maximisation.

The early days of the internet were full of these little loopholes, I for one remember ordering most of my stuff from Amazon.FR rather than Amazon UK because a combination of cheaper prices and a preferential currency situation made shopping much cheaper. Many of the biggest web retailers cottoned on quite quickly about these sort of loopholes and took steps to close them. The fairest option would be to charge the same prices to everyone online, however that rarely happens with firms using other methods to block and restrict the cheaper prices depending on location. THe method used varies widely but it almost always is focussed on the location of the shopper determined by their IP address. That individual network address is used to determine your online experience and what you can or cannot do when you’re online.

This puts many people at a huge disadvantage particularly if they happen to live in a country where the state gets involved in what people do online too. People in Western democracies are used to the concept of free speech being extended online but that’s not the case for many millions who live in countries like China, Thailand and Irans for example. These are all reasons why people seek to obtain a level of anonymity online and seek to hide their location. One of the easiest way to hide your identity and the country you are based in is to choosing to buy an IP address in a different location.

Here’s an example –

The idea is that instead of any website seeing your true IP address, they instead see the false address supplied by the software. The uses are many, particularly if you engage the encryption mode in the software which protects all your data as well as your location. The ability to switch IP addresses means that anyone can bypass the various restrictions and blocks that are prevalent online. These can be extremely useful allowing people to watch geo-locked TV stations like the BBC and NBC, plus use websites that normally only allow domestic visitors access.

BBC iPlayer Detecting VPN

It’s a move that’s been greeted with shock by expats across the world, the BBC have begun to actively block access to iPlayer from outside the UK. Apparently they have been doing this for many years, but to be honest their efforts have looked a little half-hearted until now when thousands are reporting BBC iPlayer detecting VPN services from across the world.

BBC iPlayer detecting VPN

People generally bypass these content restrictions by hiding their IP addresses by using proxy or VPN servers based in the country they need. So for example a user in Spain could connect to a UK VPN server as a simple means to get a British IP address. Then they could watch all the ‘UK only’ content like the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and so on, all the sites would simply see the VPN server’s address.

Here’s an example –

BBC iPlayer Detecting VPN – the Solution

What is more some of the more sophisticated services, now offer the chance to switch to different addresses at will – meaning you could change for a British to an American address whenever you wanted to watch Hulu or a US only site.

It was so easy that literally millions of people use these services to watch all sorts of previously blocked channels. You can even use them to swap versions – I use a US VPN to watch US Netflix from the UK which has way more stuff than the UK version.

Most of the big media sites have been trying to block these services for years with moderate success. For some years most of them have been able to detect and block simple proxies, but for VPNs it’s a matter of identifying the addresses and blocking them one by one – extremely time consuming considering the thousands of services that exist. The BBC have had a rather ‘laissez faire’ attitude by occasionally blocking a high profile service but usually leaving most alone – this has now changed.   Suddenly, many people discovered their usual BBC iPlayer VPN not working – in fact most of these services stopped over night.

Over the last few weeks however the BBC has blocked thousands of VPN services. In a move widely believed as a precursor to the BBC’s paid streaming services or even an announcement on the BBC iPlayer USA release date which could be announced shortly. The reality is that people who have been using a VPN to watch the BBC online for years suddenly have been cut off.

There is hope, unless the BBC have developed some sort of system for detecting and blocking the use of VPNs automatically – something which the Chinese haven’t even figured out yet – then it’s likely that this will be short lived. Most of the VPN providers will simply switch IP addresses and re-establish connections.   Many people suspect that BBC iPlayer VPN workaround, is only suffering a temporary setback.    The truth is that although the BBC obviously doesn’t want people to watch BBC iPlayer abroad free of charge, in the long run it’s extremely expensive to keep blocking these services.

It’s probably worth avoiding any high profile service and those that heavily promote the TV as a ‘tv watching’ (which they all are) – Identity Cloaker is worth checking out as it is very low key and keeps a low ratio of user to IP address – so far into 2017,  it has not been affected by the blocks.
